MPA Consulting Engineers in conjunction with Arup and SEE Sustainability have been appointed by the Limpopo Provincial Government’s Department of Roads and Transport to undertake the Limpopo Transport Operations Plan for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
From a transport perspective it is an important mandate for the Department of Roads and Transport in the Limpopo Province to ensure a successful 2010 FIFA World Cup™ event in host city Polokwane and for travelers within the Province, as well as ensure that the event is made accessible to local communities across the Limpopo Province.
Victor de Abreu, Senior Transport Planner and Division Head at MPA for Traffic Engineering states that, “Logistics and operational planning for high intensity demand resulting from events such as the World Cup requires specialised planning approaches. Furthermore, involving the minibus-taxi industry in a formal event such as the World Cup is a fundamental feature of this assignment.” This has resulted in event planning becoming a core competency as a result of the various projects MPA has undertaken for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
The Project team has been tasked with ensuring that safe and efficient travel within the Limpopo Province is facilitated as far as possible. This includes the upgrading or provision of appropriate signage (both permanent and temporary), pavement standards and the general environment in and around key 2010 routes. The team has to ensure that municipalities are supported as far as possible in delivering the event to the people through the effective provision of transport for communities to get to and from the 5 regional Public Viewing Areas (PVAs) that are being set up within the province to ensure that the event is brought to the people of Limpopo. Seamless integration of regional transport to host city transport has to be facilitated. An important aspect of the project is the clear communication to the broader local and international community detailing the various transport options available throughout the Limpopo Province for the duration of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
